The Stronghold series came the closest to realizing this potential in a game, but even after three attempts, they left a lot to be desired (although still loads of fun.) The Total War series has Totally dropped the ball when it comes to castles and castle defense. They made no attempt to improve that over the many different iterations. PLEASE Don't use their concept.
Being able to spend time slowly building up the core (castle) of what MANY cities relied upon to survive, should be a centerpiece to this game. Watching it grow from a wooden palisade to a true fortress of a castle as people, resources, and money allow should be a major component.
Stronghold laid a good foundation for the concept. Improvements could be;
-More structural materials (wood, stone, concrete, mixes)
-More structural densities (improved technologies over time...stronger concrete..)
-Many more defensive devices/technologies (improved technologies over time...gun powder/cannons)
-Multiple layers vertically
I'll add more as I think about it.|||I didn't played the stronghold games but I agree that castles should be centerpiece. Besides, it's in the name of the game.
Even with a simple rendition as the one found of Mount and blade my heart started pumping whenever I assaulted or defended a castle.
In most RTS the choke points are paramount. A castle provides natural choke points!|||Gunpowder obsoleted the castle.|||Obviously_Not_Toot|||but that problem can be solved: magicly reinforced concrete!
Or maybe you could introduce magic into the buioding process with stockpiles of resources that are dynamically taken as used and have magicians and such using they're powers of magic to warp and elevate the resources to where they are needed. this would work well with a castle as an especially powerful mage would be seen to pick up large amounts of resources and place them into the castle modification form, this would truly set this apart from many other games and would be great to see on screen as the bricks, or logs, or even the concrete itself, through ethereal magic align themselves to create a mighty castle.|||

A building you can put down cheaply at the start, that can maybe build/store units. Then you can upgrade it with various walls, weapons, and abilities. Something dynamic and useful the entire game that allows you to claim territory effectively and can be used aggressively, not just for turtling. So that they are on the front lines supporting your troops and being fought over. Of course it would have many more upgrades and uses then in SC2.
