Veteran unit weapons

So your Legendary Dragon has amassed enough kills to reach lvl 5, but what does it gain? 50% more health & damage, and 25% extra health regeneration. (According to Supcom2) That is all fine and well, but it hasn't gained anything. except half a legendary dragon.

Say that in addition to the above your Legendary lvl5 dragon gained a fireball shooting weapon. Now you can burn those armies of soldiers and magical creatures from a safer distance. Fire breath and fireball would be two weapons that the dragon has available, with only one firing at one time, tricky part that. Firebreath would have the higher dps, but fireball is a homing area-of-effect weapon with 3-4x the range. As an example of veteran weapons.

Another example would be for Veteran archers and ranged weapons to gain Fire/poison tipped arrows, which would deal damage over time.

Having units gain something besides more HP & weapons & regeneration when they gain experience would be nice, especially for a fantasy RTS.

I.e. a veteran Mage/wizzard/warlock could gain a weak, yet fast recharging magical shield upon reaching lvl5, your King could gain an area 5% health regeneration multiplier, etc. all slight improvements that add a bit of character and depth to individual veteran units. Having extra sound clips for these units would be a cherry on top.|||you mean a system like in lotr bfme 2. where surten units, mainly heroes, gain new abilaties while leveling?|||Sounds similair to Dawn of War 2's campaign. After every mission and sometimes after leveling up, you earned new and more powerful weapon. Sometimes it was just damage increase, othertimes, it provided a new ability for the squad. Your idea sounds similar, except knowing GPG, there will be many times the amount of units DoW2 had.|||it sounds similar, yes, but this is a per-unit weapon upgrade called by the unit's script when it reaches lvl 5.

The Legendary dragon has the fireball weapon already in its blueprint, its just deactivated by default. The dragon's script then has a bit that detects when the unit reaches lvl5 veteran status and activates the fireball weapon.

So its a completely closed, per-unit system that does not directly affect gameplay but it adds a certain amount of depth to units, especially in later games. Balance, maybe, but if you let the enemy get a lvl 5 legendary fire-breathing dragon, you deserve to get fireballs shot in your general direction. ;)
