The system, whilst cool, had some problems with it, many complain that forcing people to played ranked to unlock part of the game that they bought is unfair. Others have problems with the fact that the aesthetics are compulsory and non-reversable changes to your units. Once your havocs get the unlock level 2 armour, for example, you can never have the basic armour again.
For KnC I would propose a similar system but with unlocks selectable and not only tied to rank, which work more like levels than a supcom2/FA "rank", but also to achievements unlocked with steam. Furthermore, if when aesthetics are unlocked they go to an "armory", then players can choose which visual unlock to use on their troops.
Additionally you could have a Modern Warfare 2 style rank and insignia setup, as you rank up, you unlock new titles and banners/coats of arms for your troops. Perhaps at the highest level you'd even be allowed a custom coat-of-arms like that thread suggested aeons ago. Things like this would add a element of personalisation to a genre that normally lacks it, as well as giving players further incentive to play and extending the life of the game.
I also hearby demand "legacy" or "ancient" banners and badges for those who can link a valid gpgnet account and tied to the account activation date.
After all

we are the ones who bought the games, can't we have a little shout-out?
[/self righteousness]|||I'm sure you didn't mean things like this, but I just want to make it clear anyway:
If something like this is implemented, DO NOT MAKE THE UNLOCKS DIRECTLY AFFECT GAMEPLAY!
Now that that's been said, I wouldn't mind something like this at all. Some sort of a progression system would actually add quite a bit of life to the game IMO, as long as it's superficial stuff that doesn't (over)-encourage elitism. Please no special "I was a beta tester/long-time forum member/elite sonufabish!" things that can't be gotten by everyone, even though it is tempting.
