I didn't see anywhere that this was discussed before. Should KnC have morale and if so how should it be represented?
Morale Pros:
-Wider variety of tactics. ("Terror from the skies is a bit limiting, let them fear the ground beneath their feet as well")
-Wider variety of balance. ("War Boars are easy, just make a lot of noise")
-Probably understandable. ("Hey that dragon just obliterated half my squad, nevermind I'll see if I can do better")
Morale Cons:
-Micro management. ("You there! Cover for those cowards!")
-Could get annoying. ("Sire, whilst you want an epic battle, your men want to live")
-Trickly to balance. ("Run away! They have a Critical Density of Dread Zombies")
Units with failed morale could follow one of two behaviour patterns:
- Break and run uncontrollably back towards the nearest castle/fort/whatever (Total War Style)
or
- Continue to fight but at reduced effectiveness (Dawn of War Style)
Thoughts?
Thread inspired by the picture of the scary centipede.|||I'd like to see it implemented into the game if it was done well. However, a poor use of the mechanic(Which I think think choice #1 that you provided is) could ruin the game.|||When you have the king alive your army cannot flee!
What if you had positive morale bonuses?, such that morale breaks down like this.
Positive : Possibly buffs, passive abilities activate, more responsive to orders etc.
Normal : Normal
Negative: Debuffs and or fleeing for life.
I think it would be awesome to have a faction with mainly weak combat units but that did massive morale damage, allowingtheir weaker units to fight on even ground. Counters could be fearless units or morale raising units like champions or standards.|||i dont want morale... seems like an annoying feature|||thread title|||I'd like it for the effects it could allow in terms of adding a second avenue for affecting enemy units, but I'm not sure the best way to implement it. DoW/CoH's method allowed for an alternate method of damage, but also felt a little shallow and unintuitive, while a Total War-style method would be annoying as units would now not listen to the player, which is extremely aggravating.|||Probably it would be better as just fluff to explain some types of buffs/debuffs.
So having a commander nearby provides bonuses to attack and defense, due to "high morale".
Or having an enemy cast a debuff spell on your units, they lose effectiveness due to "fear".
Actual morale mechanics dont really belong in an RTS.|||I like your thinking. It would add some intresting possiblities|||you mean like Bfme style. I think that would work very well in this game. we have already seen a pretty bfme-esque spell from the king in the E3 trailer.|||I've posted a third idea for morale in the suggestion forum. Basically, at low morale, (surviving) units surrender to the enemy, who can then re-deploy them under their control. It is a bit more detailed than that, but the main thread covers it already.|||Really hate morale as a system.|||Morale? It was meh in one of those dawn of war/warhammer RTS.
I recall that it is really annoying to have your units flee, and more annoying when your victim runs away hysterically.|||Red alert 1 technician. *shoot* *FEAR* *runs wild hysterically and uncontrollably*
Nay.
however, the paralyse/disable abilities that some units have in supcom1/2 could be used as a form of extreme fear.
i.e. dragon lands, soldiers rush in to attack it, dragon roars and paralyses some soldiers due to fear.
also useful for baselisk tpye units and other magical stuff.
Separate morale system though? Nay.|||something like a paralise abilatie or temperarely people running in fear would work I guess. I think a good example here is Lotr bfme, where you had several of these abilities. also, you ahd reduction of stats to simulate the loss of morale. I think things such as that would fit very well in this game.
I mean, we already had the area of effect armor abilitie of the aon tank in sc2, so the ground work is basicly already in place.|||I wouldn't wanna see a complex morale system, where you'd have to make your units unafraid of fighting, after they've been scared off by some zombie creature from hell..
What I would want to see is units with positive and negative auras, that only affected them when they were in the area and disappeared right as they got out of that said aura..
Even if I was a knight with a big shield and a sword I would be pretty scared shitless if something 10 feet creature not of this world came stomping towards me.. Maybe it wouldn't scare me completely off, but I would not be able to fight with a 100% efficiency..
Or even if some lovely hot Queen was on the opposing team, I'd might get affected by her charm and turn on my own army, until I snapped out of it, if she was killed or fled the battle herself..
Complex morale, nay! Scary auras, yay..|||There will be passive buff auras in KnC, as said in VBlog 21. I'm not sure about negative effects though, CT only mentioned there would be positive buffs when around a king or similar unit.|||I like my units performing the same under all conditions (as in, I generally dislike any sort of upgrade or buff - temporary or permanent), but having buffs while near important objects is miles and miles better than a generalised moral system.|||Look people. This morale garbage idea is got to be inspired from the other RTS game called Company of Heroes when the Germans say "For the fatherland" and they all go nuts and start fighting.
Dude, this is just another economic concept that will mess up Kings and Castles.
People, people, people. Just get the same economic concepts that was in Supreme Commander-1 and Supreme Commander-Forged Alliance. All this other stuff of "morale booster" is just another silly way to the "research points" concepts and "tech tree" concept that will make the the game a one trick pony, lose its versility, and make every battle against your opponent the same.
It will destroy the strategic creativity that we see is so well put in Total Annihilation, Supreme Commander-1 and Supreme Commander-Forged Alliance.
Look at how all this "research points" and tech tree garbaged destroyed the Supreme Commander Franchise with the horrible Supreme Commander-2? This silly morale option is just another fancy way of getting that annoying research points and tech tree. What are they going to do now. Just build units and send them on suicide mission? That is what they do in Supreme Commander-2? No bad idea.
Dude this "morale booster" option will just ruin the strategic versitility of the game. No need for it.|||The problem here is that the units aren't robotic tanks. They are infantry, creatures like dragons, or piloted vehicles. Do you think every soldier will fight at peak efficiency when every other soldier near him has been butchered by a 50-foot-tall dragon? Or stand his ground when mounted knights several times his weight and speed are charging towards him with better weapons? To not include some sort of mechanic to mimic the weaknesses of people is to miss a large part of warfare in general; that victory is not always the complete destruction of the enemy, simply routing him from the field is one too.|||X-Cubed|||X-Cubed
