There is a serious problem with starcraft style spell casting in a large scope game like one produced by GPG. Each spell is two clicks and a hotkey (select the caster, hot key the spell, select target). This is really not going to work.
I have given this some thought, Perhaps spell casting would be toggled like they did in TA:K. Each spell caster have a "selected" spell which they auto-cast. Say I have a wizard, I would pick blizzard, and the wizard would autocast blizzard until he run out of mana, and then default to whatever default attack he have. same thing if I select fireball.
Of course the AI has to be pretty good for it not to nuke your own army. But targeted spells simply will not work outside heroes.
Just my 2 cents.|||Spellcasting hasn't worked like that since Warcraft 3.
Now its select spellcaster group, cast spells on whichever targets you feel like. The game will use the most appropriately positioned caster to cast each spell.
Warcraft 3 also has autocasts for spells where it makes sense (cheap buffs, or spells you would use all the time like Raise Dead).|||FieryBalrog|||Well, we don't have auto casting in Supreme Commander 2 and it's not that bad there.
I don't expect units like Footmen etc. to have individual target spells.|||also, giving Kings and all your heros magik powahz is more than a little cliche'.|||Fewer abilities, more auto-casting, and TAK style weapon/spell selection.|||Spooky|||maybe with a global cooldown it can work too
since then it won't get more and more frantic the more spellcasters you get... maybe the more spellcasters you get the less the global cooldown becomes
and to make sure you just dont pile up spellcasters in your base you could make them ony reduce cooldown if they are near the one that casted the spell, it could get some cool visuals aswell. Ima thinking a energysurge chaining through your casters to the one that casts teh spell, kinda like the towers in demigod...
... we dont have any idea on what they've planned for spells and the like though
