TA style line of sight

[:1]What would be out chances of getting real line of sight back? I refer to the version that was affected by height differences in Total Annhilation.|||I loved that. Also, an increase in range for Archers and such would be awesome.|||A knight-era version of TA with modern mechanics would rock my socks.|||Directional line of sight could be neat as well (as in your units couldn't see 360 degrees around themselves).|||Mind you, there's little stopping an infantryman from turning his head around to look about.|||True, but then animate that and make his LOS change accordingly. It doesn't make sense that he can see right behind himself, even if he can turn his head, because he has a helmet on.|||I think you are taking it one step too far here. Gameplay >>> graphics and this is a good example imo. You shouldn't randomize something important as line of sight for a little graphic gimmick, it can influence gameplay too much.|||Heights and objects blocking line of sight is okay for me, but where a soldiers head randomly turns affecting it? That would be horrible.|||Also, it's not just about seeing. The soldier would also be able to hear things around him.

Anyway, TA style LoS would be nice. Maybe it's even easier to implement now with tile based maps, depending on how it is implemented.|||Epiphenomenon|||It would be cool to be able to sneak up behind someone and kill them, though, which you can't do with full 360 degree LOS unless you are cloaking.|||Mooilo|||Not if they're all facing the same way, like units often do when walking in a direction together.|||But if you are gonna sneak up on a bunch of units with a bunch of units, they will hear you.|||That made me think that if you had directional LOS, you could have radar as hearing for those units. That way, you could have stealthed units that just walked silently.|||It would probably end up wit everyone making a unit turn around randomly all the time though if that was the case.|||Well, it's a trade off- either spend some time microing your units to look behind themselves, or spend your time doing other things.
I doubt this will make it into the game but damn I think it would be cool.|||I think it would have been bloody annoying :P|||Mooilo|||I agree wholeheartedly with the IP. TA style LOS and terrain affecting range is one of the main (few) things in SupCom that was a step back from TA. I was very disappointed when I figured out that it didn't really mean that much to place a unit or artillery installation on the peak of a hill and that seizing the high ground didn't mean anything.
The idea of directional LOS: meh. I'd have to see it demonstrated to be convinced that it was worth anything. More likely a waste of time or an annoyance.|||I'm sure i read somewhere that terrain did affect range in FA, it just didn't update the range circles...|||Hazza616|||Ebola has it correct.
Weapons can actually reach out a bloody long distance if you let them. it breaks balance somewhat, but it is incredibly fun.|||seiya|||I support Line of Sight being affected by terrain, and range with some care.
