Footmen ability

Seeing as Supcom2 more heavily introduced the abilities for individual units and not just something rare units got, I'm hoping for some cool secondary abilities for every unit in the game..
Some passive and some activated.. Like a scout having a passive ability of gaining more line of sight the higher up he got on a mountain, ex.
We saw the frigate turn into a blimp and other concept art/in-game models we've seen so far are very limited, but we did see the cool model of the footman with the huge shield..
Say you gather more than just a few of these footmen.. If that doesn't grant you the ability of forming this kind of formation, I'll be very sad.. This would and could make them useable even against higher tier units, since they toughen up..

**** a dragon is coming, form up to minimize the amount of burn damage to the entire group..
Archers would also do minimum damage, since their arrows wouldn't be able to penetrate..
Catapults or "gigants" would of course not be stopable, since heavy punches would hurt like ****..
A wish of mine and a therefore suggestion :)
EDIT: Already talked about :P
viewtopic.php?t=43976|||Yeah, I think some basic formation options like this could make the infantry a lot more interesting than Warcraft style footmen..
I certainly hope GPG is considering this or something similar to make infantry interesting. The fantasy/medieval RTS field has been done before, and done fairly well.. And I'm a bit worried that GPG will just go for a vanilla medival/fantasy design for the basic units, and then put most of their focus into cool 'experimental' mega beasts. That's not what I want.. I really hope they can make the 'regular' units unique and interesting to use too.
In terms of balance though.. I think the other option may be to just make infantry cheaper later in the game, sort of like the factory veterancy/experimental factory discounts they used for SupCom2.
That way, even without cool formation buffs, we might still see people spamming basic infantry on a repeat build throughout the game just because they're cost effective as 'meat shields'.
